I grew up between books and woods, in a town that taught me to take both seriously. The Army taught me to plan; the writing taught me what I was planning for. Fifteen years in, I still think a good plan and a good paragraph share the same bones — clarity of intent, economy of means, willingness to be wrong on contact.

I am the author of The Patient Edge (Naval Institute Press, 2024) and Field Notes on Command (2022). My essays appear in War on the Rocks, MWI, and The Strategy Bridge. I keep a slow newsletter at owlandglaive.
